Quality Assurance (QA) is the process through which universities achieve continuous improvement goals by monitoring and self-assessing their Educational Offer, Research, and Third and Fourth Missions.

The University adopts a Quality Assurance System (QAS) that operates on multiple levels and through various bodies across Teaching, Research, and the Third and Fourth Missions. The QAS aims to promote the long-term monitoring of the results achieved, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions based on the tools provided by the AVA system (Self-assessment, Accreditation, and Evaluation of the Italian university system). The functioning of the University QAS is described on the dedicated Quality Assurance page of the University of Milano-Bicocca website, specifically in the section “The University Quality Assurance System”.

To ensure a structure consistent with the university-level framework, the Departmental Board appoints a Quality Assurance Coordinator for each area. Furthermore, it appoints its own representatives to the Quality Assurance Board (PQA) — one for the Teaching Branch and one for the Research Branch.

Each Department appoints a Quality Assurance Coordinator for Research who coordinates a Research Committee, with tasks of coordination, monitoring, and liaison for the relevant activities.

Tasks and Functions

The QA Coordinator for Research is responsible for driving and monitoring research activities. They are tasked with supervising and promoting the quality policy at the departmental level, identifying necessary corrective actions, and verifying their implementation.

The QA Coordinator for Research and the Research Committee support the Department in the following activities:

• Annually monitoring the "Fatti e Persone" (Facts and People) portal with reference to Research data;
• Annually allocating the FAQD (University Fund, Departmental Share) among the professors and researchers affiliated with the Department, based on predefined criteria and in accordance with the Regulations for the allocation of the FAQD by Departments;
• Assisting the Director in preparing the Departmental Three-Year Plan;
• Constantly monitoring the trends in scientific productivity and the impact of research activities in the disciplinary areas active within the Department, including through the development and calculation of ad hoc bibliometric parameters;
• Verifying the scientific activity of non-tenured research staff, evaluating their output also through bibliometric approaches and conducting periodic hearings;
• Supporting, in line with AVA3 guidelines, the planning, monitoring, and review of departmental research, if necessary through the activation of specific working groups;
• Supporting the Department in preparing the necessary documents in view of hearings by the NdV (University Evaluation Board).

The functioning of the University Quality Assurance (QA) system regarding the teaching of Degree Programmes (CdS) is described on the dedicated Quality Assurance page of the University of Milano-Bicocca website.

At the departmental level, a central role is played by the Joint Faculty-Student Committee (CPDS), which monitors the educational offer and the quality of teaching. Annually, it drafts a detailed Report for each Degree Programme, which is forwarded to all stakeholders within their respective areas of competence (see Guidelines for the functioning of Joint Faculty-Student Committees - CPDS).

Other key actors in the QA system for teaching within the Department include:

• The Departmental QA Coordinator for Teaching (Prof.ssa Paola Saracino), who acts as a liaison between the Quality Assurance Board (PQA) – Teaching Branch and other departmental bodies or committees, assisting them in fulfilling their roles in quality management for teaching;
• The Quality Assurance Management Groups (GAQ) of each Degree Programme, which include two or more professors from the programme (including the faculty member responsible for monitoring and QA), at least one student representative, and at least one administrative support staff member. Their duties are to:
• Annually draft the SUA-CdS (Annual Single Form for Degree Programmes) and the SMA (Annual Monitoring Form);
• Prepare the RRC (Cyclical Review Report) and monitor the achievement of the specified objectives;
• Monitor student career progression, their opinions on educational activities, their satisfaction upon graduation, and the employment status of graduates, also through the analysis of external databases;
• Verify the consistency between the proposed educational activities and job market demands, also by involving external stakeholders through periodic meetings with representatives from the world of work;
• Acquire and analyze the Reports of the CPDS;
• Analyze the Annual Report of the NdV (University Evaluation Board);
• Prepare the self-assessment form for the Degree Programme during periodic accreditation and prior to the NdV hearing.
