We are pleased to announce the next meeting of the Research Dialogues series, an initiative of the Business for Society PhD Students aimed at creating a regular space for academic exchange, discussion, and feedback within our research community.
The seminar will feature Federico Malerba, who will present his research titled:
“Financial Literacy of the Self-Employed: Evidence from the OECD Financial Literacy Surveys”
Using OECD/INFE 2023 data from 25 countries, the study compares financial literacy and its components between self-employed and wage-employed workers, controlling for individual characteristics and country fixed effects. The results show that self-employment is not associated with higher overall financial literacy. While no systematic gap appears in advanced economies, self-employed individuals in emerging and developing economies display lower financial literacy, mainly due to weaker financial knowledge and behavior. Robustness analyses suggest that, in advanced economies, self-employed individuals may possess stronger entrepreneurial-specific financial competencies, although these do not translate into higher general financial literacy.
The seminar will take place on Wednesday, July 15, from 09:00 to 10:30, in hybrid mode: in person in Room 4096, U7, 4th floor, and online via Webex.
