Energy decarbonisation is essential for mitigating climate change, yet its success depends on technological advancements, individual responsibility, and behavioural change.
This study examines how human values, beliefs, and socioeconomic factors shape personal responsibility for climate change mitigation across EU countries.
Using data from the 2023/2024 European Social Survey (ESS), the research analyses the relationship between climate change beliefs, institutional trust, political orientation, and socio-demographic characteristics with individual energy-saving behaviours.
The findings indicate that individuals attributing climate change to human activity are likelier to engage in energy conservation and support renewable energy policies. Higher institutional trust, education, and individual income levels positively correlated with pro-environmental behaviours among European countries.
